I was molested by someone I considered family, my "best friends" brother, 4 years ago. When I was 12 and I only told my mom it happened in the hotel not where I'm from. If it happened also where we both live, our home town, then can anything happen or is it too late? I mean, It's been 4 years?

i don't think the statue of limitations has run out.

talk to your mother again. under the law a 12 year old girl can not consent to being molested. it was not your fault. tell your mother about your concerns and she can help you decide your next step.

good luck.

Unfortunately, I have experiance with this. My daughter was sexually abused and molested at age 9. That was 7 years ago. My daughter has never been the same, although the molester is doing time now, it was about 2 years before they did anything with him. It will be hard to prove unless documented. I was lucky, as another got him and he confessed to 8 molestations and sexual abuse. If their are others he has messed with, they can come forward and you can also do the same. The problem is proving it. If others come forward, I would suggest you do also. It ain't easy when those lawyers start grilling you on questions, because you have to tell everything that happened. It is hard on a young woman to admit to it. Family or not, their is a time when one must come forward. It can't be opened up after 8 years by law, but again it depends on your state. Believe me, it isn't easy coming forward.....Personally I hate child molesters, but eventually they get caught. "Strength is in numbers"! If you check around discreetly, maybe you can find others he messed with and then ban together for a stronger unification, the law frowns on child molesters.....

Do you mean is it too late to press charges? You have to ask someone where you are.

Have you considered talking to your guidance counselor at school about this? Even if it happened 4 years ago, it seems like it is bothering you still. Talking to someone else might help you cope.

Oh, remember that you can decide which counselor you want to talk with -- at least that has always been the case where I teach. I know you may be assigned someone based on your last name or your class, but if you have a male counselor and want to talk to a female, you should. Ask your counselor or the secretary. If you don't want to talk to a counselor, the school nurse or your family doctor or minister are other options. They are trained or will be able to help you find someone who is trained in dealing with kids who've had the experience you had.

Remember that most counselors, doctors, nurses and ministers have heard stories like yours before. There is no reason to be nervous about talking to them. If you are concerned, consider starting the discussion by asking them if they can keep what you are going to tell them a secret or who they have to tell by law if they can't. It will make it easier to speak to them.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I don't think 4 years is too long to do anything about it. I think you have 7 or 9 years or something like that. The problem will be proving it. Without getting a rape kit when it happened, its basically your word against his
