There was one presented a few years ago with Haley's Comet, not sure if you remember it or not, but that was one that had everyone talking. Very strange and very good question on your part.

The one where Dick Clark/Ryan Seacrest is forced to insert canisters of anthrax into the Times Square New Year's ball--when the ball drops, the entire crowd is infected, but by the time people realize what's going on, people have gone back to their homes all over the world, spreading cheer and contagions throughout the land. If they could somehow get Dick/Ryan to actually ride the ball as it dropped, that'd be even cooler.

Three words for you: gamma ray burst. A gamma ray burst from millions of light years away could destroy all life on the planet and we currently don't have any defense. The probability of it happening is pretty much zero... but it's my "favorite" theory, lol.

I find comfort in thinking that the end of the world will come to each of us individually (meaning when we each die) and not as some great catastrophic phenomena or war. That helps me.
