A friend of mine got arrested for driving while impaired, he lives in Arizona. It's his first offense, does anyone know what type of penalty or fine he'll face?

DWI laws are really state-specific, but he's definitely looking at many $thousands in fines, and possibly a good chunk of jail time. I wish cannabis were legal, but with some way to keep it out of the hands of idiots who would DWI/DUI. It's totally unnecessary to put yourself and other people at risk to be intoxicated while driving, on ANYTHING, from alcohol to prescription pain pills to cannabis.

Diamond: Prohibition didn't work back in the 20's, so what in the hell makes you think the current incarnation our government calls the "War on Drugs" is working any better? Banning substances only puts profits in the hands of criminals, and it eliminates any chances of product quality control. People abuse alcohol and prescription drugs, but you're not screaming for the feds to ban Vicodin or vodka. At least with legalized drugs we'd be able to control the profits and put them to far more effective uses than lining the pockets of criminals.

HOME: Just because you've never heard of a car accident involving cannabis doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Intoxicated driving is intoxicated driving, no matter the substance. Nobody should be behind the wheel of a 4,000lb missile on wheels with a gas tank in the back unless they're flat sober, and even then I still worry about sober drivers.

I'd say he's in some serious trouble. Arizona has passed some very strict laws in the past 6 months. It's part of the zero tolerance program. First offense or not. For the past year there have been advertisements by the state telling people of the new law. You'd have to be stoned on a regular basis for your friend not to have seen them.
He will be facing some jail time in addition to a fine. As well he should, there are consequences for breaking the law. He's lucky he didn't kill someone. What angers me is this exact kind of behavior is the exact reason why people who legitimately could use marijuana for cancer pain and naseua can't get it because of the abuse of so many.

I was in a bad car accident as a passenger in my sister in laws car when an idiot in the fast lane of the freeway in L.A. decided to change his cd at high speed. For 5 years I have lived with the consequences of his actions. 2 Back surgeries, neck and shoulder surgery. Not a day goes by that I don't have pain because he wanted to get high. Was that fair to me, my kids, my husband? My youngest was just a toddler and yet after I was hit I could never pick him up or even have him sit in my lap due to pain.

And the person below must be high because Marijuana car wrecks happen all the time. We have an aquaintance whose daughter was KILLED by a driver high on nothing but marijuana no drinking or other substances were involved.

People die and injure others on marijuana all the time wake up out of your purple haze denial.

Don't listen to people like Jared. They don't realize that driving after smoking is nowhere near as bad as driving drunk. I have never, in my 31 years, heard of a person wrecking a car while high on marijuana.

Now, to answer your question, most likely your friend will get a heavy fine and suspended jail time pending they complete a drug intervention program. It will definitely not be cheap. They'll probably lose their license for up to a year as well. Depending on the state, they should be able to get a restricted license, to drive to work or school, after the first 6 months or maybe from the beginning.

One more reason as to why this needs to continue to be outlawed. Being in Arizona, he may be in trouble.

Home made a statement that read he had never heard of someone high on cannabis having a car accident. I do not know what planet he is from, but this is completely without a doubt untrue. My husband was rear ended by a person who was high on cannabis. The driver was going 50 miles an hour and nearly killed my husband as he sat at a red light. The driver didn`t even noticed the light was red.

He should get the death penalty. Why would you be friends with someone who willingly put so many people's lives in danger by driving under the influence? That's so sad... so many people die in the hands of people like that. Honestly, he will probably walk away free so he can do it again next week.
