Just got a used computer, and when I checked the disk usage there was only 2% left. Computer works quite slowly, and I would like to make it faster.

The best way of doing this would to be to reformat your hard drive and reinstall your operating system.....

First of all, let me tell you, the speed of a computer does not depend on your Hard disk space... Unless there is a little virtual memory installed on your system, there is no link between making the system faster by removing things from hard disk..
If your Virtual memory is too low, and, you can increase the mem, by removig some of your old files from your drive, either by writing it to CD, or a Pen Drive, and then changing the Virtual memory by Going to System>Environmental Variables.
But this may not improve your speed if you have PI processor or less!! Upgrade to the latest processor and increase the RAM, You can attain what you wish..

If you have the original installation discs, you could format the entire computer and have a fresh installation.

If not, you might just have to deal with going through My Computer and getting rid of everything but the important system files.

if you have the original XP backup disks then you should do a full disk reformat. it will erase everything on the hard drive. but before that make sure you save all your files on a CD-Rom or DVD. then you can proceed with the format. make sure you format the c: and d: drives.

Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. Check all the programs installed and find out what they do. When you are convinced you don't need them, Uninstall them. Do not delete any programs or you will have more trouble down the line.
