If reformatting should be used as a last resort, what else can I do to eliminate the problem?

I have Norton AntiVirus on my computer.
When I run a scan it detects a virus but does not fix it, even though in the settings I have selected the recommended option to automatically fix all problems. Hah. So much for that.

Reformatting should be a total last resort, as you will loose everything installed.

You should invest in a good antivirus, Norton or Mcaffee, and a good spyware killer, like spydoctor or windows defender.

How to Format a Hard Drive

1.) Make a back up of EVERYTHING you need on CD's or other removable source.
2.) Check your back up that it is actually there. Documents, emails, photos, spreadsheets, any files that are important to you.
3.) Check your back up again and make absolutely sure that you did not miss anything. Remember once you format, anything not backed up will be lost.
4.) Have any and all installation disks of any programs on hand that you will need (ex. Windows, Office, ect…). You will also need your Windows start up disk.
5.) Now you're ready to format. Reboot or hit the reset button.
6.) Hold the Control key until the startup menu appears. Select the Command prompt only and press Enter. Type format c: and press Enter. From there follow the onscreen instructions.
7.) Once the format is complete, you will need to install Windows before anything else. Put the start up disk in the floppy drive and hit the reset button. From there follow the Windows installation procedure.
8.) IMPORTANT: Make sure you have a full version of Windows and not an upgrade version.
9.) Install the rest of your programs.
10.) Restore all the data from your back up CD's to bring your machine up to date.

You first try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html The problem will be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
After running the virus scan delete all temprory internet files including off line content and also unwanted files and temp. files. Finally, carryout a defragmentation . Your system will be back to the normal...!

do a bit defender free virus scan and removal, worked for me. also run free spybot, and free adaware. The free bit defender takes along time but should remove the virus, it does it automatically but will let you know, Norton missed mine also. You should be ok.
