Being an American is a privilege...
Being an American was bad during the American Revolution...
Being an American was bad during the Civil War...
If being an American today is what you consider "worse" because of you caring too much about those in the Mid-East, which ironically, never cared for you... then imagine how bad it is for the generations after you who never know how to be an American?
Because there would be no America.
For me, it would even be worse to be an American to not do anything and watch religious fundamentalist wage holy war because they don't agree with what you precious the most... freedom. And yet they will never show (as in the past) an ounce of sympathy if ever America is in peril.
Not even 1% of how you feel now.

No. The worst time was probably during the Civil War. If you didn't get killed over the war and resulting strife, diseases that we treat today with Pepto Bismol were death sentences. Anyone want to die from dysentery? How about diarrhea?
I think this is the best time to be an American. Now is the time when we can stand up and say our leaders are full of crap and not be afraid that we'll end up against a firing squad or disappear in the night. This country was born out of dissent, and it is the duty of every American to question their leaders when they feel the country is on the wrong path.

No Mike, this is the best time to be an American. The death and funeral of former President Ford have help bring this forward for me. Now is the time that we show ourselves as the compassionate nation that we have been and can be. Can we be hard as nails. You bet. We will not stand for world atrocities. Can we be kind and compassionate? You bet. Look at how we responded to victims of the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. Humanity as a whole is good. It's the few that aren't that mess it up for everyone else. I think we have forgotten that we need to let other be themselves first and to look for the skeletons in our own back yard before we condemn others for theirs.

Pretty much. My reason has nothing to do with the Middle East. I've discovered many nasty rumors and they digust me. It's good to live in this country, but don't ever trust your government...we have to learn to fight as a people because we're the true leaders (in a True Democracy).
But hey, I will always be thankful to live in America. It's the most beautiful place in the world.

I am more proud of being an American today than ever before. One thing to remember is while the people are angry and spouting off at us, we can see them. If need be I will die for my beliefs of this country. It may not be the best, but is is sure a lot better than anything else I can see.

no! how about during the great depression or the civil war? big deal if we're in a war. it's peoples decision to join the war and risk their lives and i honor that but atleast our gov't isnt picking random people and forcing them into the army like other countries. god we have it so good here, american is the land of oppurtunity. we're FREE here and that's something half the other countries don't entirely have. if i here one more person complain about being an american i'm going to scream

No I am proud to be an American. I think it would be worse to be born in a country where we have not freedom. A question similar to yours would not be allowed for posting.

This is the worst time to be an American, only if you are afraid or ashamed, and I'm neither. I am proud and thankful to be an American.

It is getting close. I am sure Civil War era was worse, but I sure hope we can repair the damage we have done from being an Imperial nation.

civil war... 10,000 times worse...
Revolutionary war... 1,000 times worse...
WWII... 500 times worse...
deadly flu/polio epidemics... 200 times worse
but this isn't exactly a fun time either...
oh, these are my estimations based on my opinion...
and I really doubt there are millions... you should take a trip there and learn the reality of the situation...
the sky is not falling..
