A rat and actually they do not bite. Well, they do but only if you have food on you hand. I love rats. And to all those ppl who think they are dirty they spend 90% or their times cleaning themselves. They hate being dirty. GET A RAT

A ferret can be trained not to bite and are a friendly pet to have so long as you spend the tme to train and love it like any pet. I dont know much about rats but have owned mice before I would feel that a rat would pose a higher chance of biting than a ferret. But hey thats only my opinion but remember that if you live in California ferrets are an illegal animal to keep. Good Luck
The smell can be detered if fed the right food and bathed only once a week with ferret shampoo my house never smells

A disclaimer -- we own a rat but not a ferret. We chose our rat because they are supposed to be the most friendly and adaptable rodent/small pet. We have found her to be indeed adaptable, friendly and very sweet. Just from what I have read I would choose a rat over any small pet; our experience shows rats to be very good pets, even with quite small children.

Ferrets are NOT rats. They are mustelids. (same family as otters, fishers, badgers, meerkats, mongoose) They only bite when playing or scared. ( I've been a ferret Mom for 16 yrs.) Please do not get a ferret, unless you read up all about them. They need 24 hr a day care, 24 hr a day food/water. They aren't the kind of animals you can get and forget. They are not cats, they are not dogs. You have to devote time to a ferret EVERYDAY.
Rats are rodents, mice, sqirrels, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters.
(anything with all 4 front teeth LONG, they eat seeds, just about anything.
Ferrets eat ferret food, they are carnivores. (they don't eat sweets, milk, veggies or fruit) Ferrets NEED 4-6 hours of PLAY a day. OUTSIDE of their cage. You MUST play with them or they get distructive. ( digging, climbing, pooping and peeing in all the corners...they can be litter box trained, but YOU have to train them)
Please do me a favor and don't get a ferret because you think they're cute. It's a LOT of work, time and energy to have ferrets and 90% of those bought in pet shops end up at shelters.
I know. I have 2 of them right now...they were abused and 1 is deaf....
Get a rat....they're easier...thank you...

Of course, I would tell you to get a pet rat because I've had around 200 rats since 1997 and I think they are the best choice for a rodent pet.
I've been around ferrets too as my friends have had them. What I've seen is a combination of a cat and a weasel in these little rascals. They are so mischievious, playful, and fun to watch.
What I think you should do is to check out a few websites on the care of each pet and see which one fits better into your lifestyle.

I have had my rat for almost 3 years now and she has a great personality. I think you should get a rat if you like them. Make sure you get the big type of rats because they are more easy to handle.

A rat. Ferrets can be aggressive, and escape, they are also carnivores. Rats are highly inteligent, and clean. The myths about rats aren't true.

rats are easier to take care of. i own a ferret and hes a lot of work! he also smells quite a bit but you have to change his cage every week which takes at least a half hour to do. believe me, rats are smaller and easier!

Depends on how much time you have to devote to this pet. The rat is going to be less work for sure. So maybe that's the way to go.
