Can anyone explain to me the origin of the Dutch flag?

The flag was first used when the Dutch fought Spain. The king of Spain claimed to be the king of the Netherlands (and wanted it to become Catholic, but the Dutch were mainly Protestant). He also wanted a 10% tax.
The rebels called "geuzen" first used the Dutch flag, then it was orange, white and blue. Their leader was Prince William of Orange. The flag was named "Prinsenvlag" ("Princeflag") after him. Orange was a part of France where he came from.

Later the orange changed to red, maybe because red was a stronger colour, maybe because the Dutch were later divided between the republicans and the ones who favored a kingdom.
So definitely, the red comes from the royal family, but why the white and blue was used nobody knows. Some say it was just better visible. The Dutch flag does not come from the French one! It is the other way around.
