From the nature of the draft, the draft has become not that important. Just look at the draft pick of the best players. Many of them are quarterbacks and busts. Who wants to pay good money for a bust? Wouldn't you rather save that money on a free agent or pick up players that weren't drafted? There is a whole scheme on picking good players in like the third or fourth round so they don't have to offer as much money. Many of the "losing teams" even "sell" their top rounds to other teams. So let's say one team trades their first and second pick for 5 fourth round picks (the deal being extended for multiple years).

Pride. Look this year for the WORST team you will finish 1st or 2nd draft pick win or lose. They can't get any lower then second because they would at best get 3 wins and every other team has 4. So this year it doesn't work in that sense. This though is why the NHL put in a WEIGHTED DRAFT LOTTERY. I believe the NBA uses the same system but not sure how they do theirs exactly. What it means by weighted is you can move up up to 2 spots I believe and fall up to 3 spots. I could be wrong on the exact number but I am pretty sure that is how they do it. They take the top 5 teams or so and then pick. If teams seemed to be throwing games the NFL might start to consider it to make things honest.

It's hard to "throw" a football game because of the nature of the industry. All of the players on, say, the Lions know that their contracts aren't guaranteed (only the bonuses are) and that every minute of every game is taped and every team gets those tapes. So if you know that your potential next employer (GMs, scouts, etc.) will be seeing the tape of the last game, why would you not try your best?
NFL salary-cap issues and free-agency causes SO much turnover of rosters, so something like 20 to 30 percent of the guys on bad teams will be looking for jobs after the season. Why would they hurt their future chances?
Unless you're great starting player, being labled as lazy or a quitter is a great way to lose your spot in the NFL and the fat paycheck that comes with it.

Wins are the focal point of EVERYONE's contract. The GM, the coach, the assistant coaches, everyone except the team owner. If the owner says, you make 10% of your bonus from every win, with 10 wins being full bonus, then you win, period. No NFL team tries to lose to get a better draft pick.

Wins make money. That's a certain fact. Brady Quinn hasn't played any NFL games yet. His success has yet to be conceived.

Honestly, Detroit can lock up the number 1 pick when they throw the game to Dallas. While you'd hope that they'd be competitive to the end and most teams are, Detroit's not going to try to win when they can lose and eliminate their rival the Packers from the playoff race. That's a win in a rivalry, which is worth alot more than any other win except maybe a Super Bowl.

You need fans, if you give up the last game you begin getting a reputation for giving up, and fans never like a team they are unsure if they can count on them, besides, its noteven entirly about winning for NFL players, if you're played millions of dollars to play a game, you want to prove you're the best, players have far too big egos to get run over and just entirly give up, its also a large momentum and big boost for next season if they are able to eliminate a team from the playoffs
