She is a King Cavalier Spaniel and I got her when she was already about 6 months old. As soon as I even pick up my camera she hi-tails under the bed! She can be in a deep sleep and as soon as she hears me turn the camera on-she's gone!! It is just a digital camera not a video type one . It has me stumped!! She acts like she is going to get hit when I put it up to my face to take a picture and I have NEVER hit her!! Any ideas??

My mother's dog does the same thing. I think it's the flash.

Maybe because you act diffrent when holding the camera. Maybe she thinks you are going to do something weird to her with it. Try to use the camera taking pictures of other things around her and ignore her. Then later pick her up then sit next to the camera with her and let her investigate it a little.
I mean really if i were an animal and someone picked up this weird thing and then stared at me with it i would probly run under the bed too.

Do you know what happened to her before you got her ??? Maybe someone tried to hit her with a camera or something like it....maybe shes just afraid of strange noises. Why not put it on the floor and let her smell it, then slowly pick it up and let her see what you're going to do with it...slow now...don't scare her more..
Some carmeras put out a high pitched whine, maybe it hurts her ears.. (I know my husbands cameras whine, as does the printer...womens hearing is usually more accute than a man's, YOU may not notice the noise, but the dog can hear it.)

Did she have an owner before you? If she did, that owner might have done something with a camera or something similar to frighten the dog. Or maybe she just doesnt like the flash. My dog hates it when you take pictures of her. She always runs away.

It might be the flash. My cats know when the silver thing goes up to Mommy's face to close their eyes. I have very few pictures of them with their eyes open, or they walk directly to the camera so I can't take a picture because they are too close. It's really annoying.

Because of the loud pitch the camera makes as it warms up
