What caused this to happen and have to do to get them to stay in the position I left them in?

It could be that your computer encountered something in the reboot process and went back to the original format. Mine does it some times and I have no clue on how to fix it. You might watch for virus warnings and do system checks and defrags on a weekly scheduled basis to clear out any possible problems.
