My pc is telling me my SD card is not formatted and won't let me open it. Problem is if I format I lose a lot of pics. Does anyone know a way around this problem. I am running XP.

What size is the SD Card? Are you using an external or built-in SD card reader?

Older SD card readers (standalone or built in to the computer/laptop) often will not handle newer SD cards larger than a certain size. This commonly happens at 512MB, 2GB and 4GB card sizes. This is usually solved by getting a newer USB SD card reader. I had a built-in toshiba laptop SD card reader that would not handle cards larger than 1GB, but external USB readers worked fine.

If you're using an SD card reader built into the computer, sometimes a driver upgrade will support larger SD card sizes.

If you have the camera that put the pictures on the SD card and the camera software you can get the pictures off of the card by directly connecting your camera to the computer with the card in it. Be careful about putting your SD card into a camera that didn't put the pictures on it in the first place. Newer cameras handle that situation fine, but some cameras want to reformat the card just like your computer wants to now.
