As part of a holiday 'project' i decided to ask a couple of questions being interested to know how much the 'average' American knew about Australia. With the exception of the obvious query as to if they knew the name of our Prime Minister, anything about our system of government (surely that comes under general knowledge?) i did not mention anything remotely political. I was totally UNinterested in the political aspect. Most people know all there is to know or indeed all they WANT to know about world politics. The subject matter is done to death, tediously repetitious bringing out those obsessively dedicated to a single ideology. I was simply curious as to the extent of American awareness of our common heritage plus comments on Australian geography, lifestyle etc. Was i a naive idiot !! What i copped was a tirade of accusations i.e we have a racist Prime Minister, ARE a racist people who neglect our aborigines etc etc.
NOW my FINAL question -- why are Americans so filled with hate?

I'll just answer the last part. We are no more filled with hate than anyone else in the world. To take to heart more than around 5% of what you read on Yahoo Answers is a mistake. The anonymity of the internet brings out the dark things in people. I've always had a fond view of the Aussies. I certainly don't know your political issues like I should, but muddling through our politics is enough for me.

Like I said, all your experiment proves is that people are jerks online.

Why do you call people who are interested in Racism hateful.

America was a major influence on South Africa. Would you call that HATRED of the WHITE, APARTHIED SUPPORTING Dutch colonists?

We do hear that there is a problem with Native Australian Indiginous, not that we don't stink because of the Indian problem, but hey they built Casinos, sell tax free smokes and booze to us, so their getting even for Mahattan.

You're saying the Indiginous have a fair shot at jobs and housing like any white person? They are credit managers, corporate exectutives, stock brokers or are they porters at the docks.

If we give the indiginous a chance to speak here they will say everything is mellow and cool everywhere.

And no, I doubt many hear are aware of much.

I mean I recall the Dijederoo from that old 60's song (Tie Me Kangaroo Down), I know there's a lot of surfing there and a lot of sharks, I know a tad about the outback, I know the Quala isn't a bear but a nasty little creature that can rip your arms to shreds, I know you're third outside of Canada and England for contributions to American hit music (Little River band, Men at Work, Oliva Newton John, a lot more if we lump NEw Zealand in), you big for runaway Americna movie productions, but that's about the size of it for me...

That is easy. When it was said, "Let he who is without sin, throw the first stone." 5 americans stoned the girls. Coming from a country that still has racism, we are a democratic country that can say be racist and yet criticize you for being racist. lol The American way. Yet, the world forgets, if the Sleeping Lion ever gets mad and withdraws its monetary aid and troops, the whole world will suffer. So I guess Americans can begrudged a little hypycrosy. PS. Did any Americans ever tell you who MASSACARED the American Indians?

I disagree. There are just a lot of angry people in the world, not of one particular nationality. I honestly like Americans over Eastern Canadians anyday, to the point that when heading out for the big cross-country trip next year, I will drive through Ontario and go to Quebec instead.

I don't think there are stupid questions but I do think there are some on here who do say abusive things to others and make remarks that are totally out of line. I just report those to yahoo answers and let them deal with them, that is how they get a paycheck for doing their job just as all of us try to do ours. I am grateful for yahoo answers because I have gotten a lot of good, informative information from here, and not even had to ask the question.

Abusive and insolent are the dominant attitudes on YA. Espacialy in R&A. the forces of evil are in contorle of this earth and they are not going to alow any reasonable interaction concerning The Truth of God to operate unchalenged... concidering Yahoo's anti God position... it is to be expected that any positive civil discourse in this kind of forum will be attacked by negatives in the extream.

The only thing I know about Australia is that it is a land where freedom is in grave danger of disapearing... any people denied the right to defend themselves are no more than slaves.... any "governent" so afraid of The People that they deny them the right of self defence is no government...it is a dictatorship.

I'm not sure exactly what you asked, but maybe your tone was taken out of context. Sometimes that happens. I can assure you that Americans are not hateful people. By the way, I don't think anyone from any country really cares to know about the Australian or any other government. Not to say that we hate Australia b/c we do not. Its just not something that we bother to learn about. No offense.

Didja even read the answers to yer first question, mate? I just went through them and as a fellow- non-American, I can't tell you I'd be much offended at most of them. Most of them were disparaging to yanks!

Judging from yer comments, looks ta me like yer spoiling fer a fight!

I wouldn't worry about it. It doesn't matter what you ask on Y!A, you'll get a bunch of a-holes answering.
Most Americans (USA) wouldn't even be able to point out Australia on a world map, let alone have a valid opinion on Australia.
Peace
