Adware and spyware can boggle down your PC.
You could download
Spybot - Search & Destroy
at
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
It can find lots of problems on your PC. I suggest you try other things first but this is an option. Just DO NOT install TeaTimer along with Spybot - Search & Destroy : Why TeaTimer will make you select what registy changes take place on your PC and if you do not understand the registry this can get annoying I edit the registry all the time and understand it fully and TeaTimer still bugs me sometimes because it will present you with lots of registry changes. But its easy not to install it during the install uncheck TeaTimer.
This program works really well though if the slow if caused by spyware or adware this will have a good chance of solving your problem or at least making things a little better.
Make sure you defrag your hard drive and delete any unneeded software or programs that you may have downloaded and have not need for this includes games as well.
P.S If you accidentally install TeaTimer you can uninstall it or disable it in the options I believe. This program is pretty safe and easy to use.

It may be for a couple of reasons. The first step I would suggest would be to clear cookies, clear your history, and a disk cleanup. Restart.
If that doesnt work, check msconfig start>run>msconfig. To your far right, you will find programs running in the background of your pc. You can choose to delete or keep these in your startup, but they are running with all of your other programs. You can find a list of these by typing msconfig or startup in yahoo.
Restart.
If that doesnt work, you need to download a program that will remove any spyware on your pc. You may not be getting pop-ups but spyware downloads secertly into your procceess and can cause your pc to move slowly and to freeze. I recommend, sypbot search and destory. Just type that in yahoo.
Restart after it found all the junk!
You should be ok. If these steps fail, it may be a bigger problem like a hard drive issue or a virus. If you are not getting an error message though, its highly unlikely you are having those problems. You may of received a cd with your pc that will test your hard drive and if everything else is fine then take it to a pc geek and allow them to test the rest of your hardware.
Questions to ask?
When did this start?
Where you on the internet?
Did you install a program?
These also may be the cause. You can also try system restore. Hope this helped

I recently had the same issue and it stumped me for a good couple of weeks. My first question is do you have a DVD player and or burner on your machine? If the answer is yes then I will leave you a link that will probably solve your issue. If not then stop here I can't give you a precise reason because there are many things that can cause this. The number one reason is that your proccessor is getting to hot. Clean the inside of the computer with a can of air. make sure your fans are working.
Ok if you have a dvd player/burner there was a problem with a recent windows update and the software used to playback or burn DVD's. This is a Dell link but it should work even if you don't have a Dell.
Hope it helps

The reason is Low memory recourses, along the virtual disk cache being to low. So, when it tries to run any more programs it will freez up the computer. A man who has a degree in computer technology along with a masters degree has taught a class room of college students this very thing.
Two ways to correct this situation:
(1) increase the Disk cache
(2) upgrade RAM
The Virtual disk cache is used to swap with the RAM when its running low on resources.

Try this:
Note:
Before doing any of the maintenance steps outlined below make sure that your system is free from viruses and/or of any other undesirable Internet bugs, by running a thorough security scan of your machine. After you are through with it, go to Microsoft updates or Windows updates and download any and all available updates for both office and windows.
Now, you are ready for the following:
HOW TO DO A THOROUGH CLEAN UP (Windows XP)
While you are connected to the Internet do the following:
1. Click on tools ... Internet options. There you will see three buttons next to each other... “Delete Cookies” ... “Delete Files” and “Settings.” Also, below the settings button you will see another one “Clear history.”
2. Click on “settings” - go to “Edit” - Click on “select all” - Go to files, click delete and wait till all Internet trash files are gone.
3. Go back and click on “delete cookies” and wait till all cookies are gone
4. Go back and click on “Delete files,” put a check mark on the little white square shown on the small window that will open, click OK and wait for a little.
5. Go back and click on “Clear history”, click “yes” and you are done.
6. Now do a check disk and a defrag, then restart your computer and see if the problem is resolved. It is assumed that you know how to do that.
7. If the above steps don’t do the job, here is a little program that keeps your machine in shape and free from crashes:
Get on the web and go to http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/site; download the free trial program, familiarize your self with it and use it to clean up your registry automatically along with a sort of other helpful and useful maintenance chores. It is an excellent little program and does wonders with PC maintenance tasks and I strongly recommend it! It works on the background on its own automatically.
Here is how to clean website addresses from you browser bar:
While you are connected to Internet, go to “Tools” … “Internet Options,” “Content” tab … “Auto Complete button” … click on “clear forms” and you are finished.
Hope this helps!
