My wife and I are best friends, and it's great. You need trust and acceptance, and need to feel secure in yourself and your spouse. You need mutual respect, caring, and affection. If you're not best friends, then some or all of those are missing.

I knew right away we would be good friends because we had so much in common.

They certainly should be. Best friends are best friends because they let the other person be who they really are, and they accept them no matter what. It's when one tries to change the other, or condemns them for their actions and ridicules them.. that the bond is broken. Whether husband and wife, or whatever.. when you stop accepting that person for who they are, and stop respecting them, confiding in them, loving them, and spending time with them, the friendship takes a nose-dive. I don't think it's bad to have another friend to confide in though. Especially if your husband/wife no longers listens to you or gives creedance to what you have to say. When that happens, you are not getting the "sounding board" you need, and you will seek someone else for friendship.

I think it should be that way, I love my husband so much and we talk about everything, communication is the key, if you don't let things come in between that your relationship gets strong, and if you're happy and he is,so are the kids. It's so strange the way we are so open with one another, if he does something that bothers me or vice versa, we tell eachother and that clears the air, we're not perfect we do have our spats but we've been together almost 14 years and our relationship just gets better with time.

Well, a marriage will usually be more comfortable and last a little longer if the two are good friends. Some people marry for the sake of lust and not compatibility....friendship is where it is at.

My Mom once told me "Love is a friendship caught on fire".
She also told me when I got married that you have to keep feeding a fire if you wanted it to burn. Otherwise the flame grows small then embers glow & slowly grow cold along with everything else they once heated.
My husband became my best friend before I knew it & then he became my love & husband then our childs father & my best friend & love all over again. Our fire burns brightly,,

They seem to be best friends in a strong marriage,by that I mean they seem to be able to stand together in the hard times.

They are supposed to be. You live together, have sex together, combine your incomes and rear children together. If that's not your best friend, you have a problem. Couples therapy is in order.
