Hi! I was wondering the same thing about the song when I watched the movie. (over and over) I fell in love with that song in the fifties and so many woman have sang it over the years. Even Mary Higgins Clark wrote a book with that name. What a heart wrenching melody, especially after an ended relationship. I went online to find different women who recorded it and ended up buying Linda Edler's version. She is a big Broadway singer. In the "Prince of Tides" I think Barbara Striesand sang it but I wish I could find the "Notebook" soundtrack. Good Luck!

Which war do you consider to be the last one? I suspect it could have been banned during WWII, because the Republic of Ireland was neutral. If a damaged ship came into a neutral harbour, the neutral country was supposed, by convention, not to let the repaired ship go back out to sea. Rumour has it that the Irish allowed German ships to leave their harbours, which resulted in a lot of bad feelings in the UK towards the Irish republic. On the other hand, when the USA was still neutral, they sold arms to the Germans. It's all water under the bridge now.
