I just moved into a condo and the board whom are volunteers and unit owners do not seem to know what they are doing. They want to keep the hot water temp at a low temp - I find myself running water for 10 mins before it gets hot enough for a shower. They are also suggesting that each unit owner take turns in cleaning the hallways and stairs. I thought association fees is to take care of such things.

They are much too cheap. Your fees should cover cleaning the halls and you should be able to set your own water settings.

Wow. Your condo association sounds like a jolting pain in the A-$-$. Your fees are supposed to take care of cleaning the common areas. Also, what kind of water heaters do you have? If you have your own then of course you should be able to turn it out. I am going to assume you didn't check out their financials because it sounds like they are in trouble if they are trying to ellicit condo owners into janitorial duty. I honestly have never heard of such a thing. Sounds like you need to have a talk with the board members and find out what the heck is going on.

Don't you have your own water heater?? You set the high temp on it yourself.
As for the hallways and stairs, check your association paperwork. It should clearly spell out what the responsibilities of he associtation are compared to those of yourself. It may be a matter of keeping association dues down instead of paying higher rates to do small tasks.
Good luck.

Each association can work differently, it depends how they were set up and maintained. Yours definitely sounds strange. I guess it is best to check out the association before you buy. I agree with you, the fees should have people doing the work. If I wanted to sweep the halls I would have my own place.
