There are the party grunts who work all their lives as a party apparatchik who never have the "IT" factor...that mixture of intelligence, wit, charm, looks, etc.... to ever be considered as nominatable...much less electable. Then you have the pretty boys (or girls) who just are charismatic enough to be the flavor of the month. You know how it works. You see it every day in your school or workplace. A combination of luck, charm, etc. comes together and voila! a candidate!
