In order to simplify (4y + 8) / (y^2 + 7y + 10), what you need to do is factor numerator and denominator.

Note that in the numerator, you can factor 4, and the denominator gets factored as per factoring methods.

[4(y + 2)] / [ (y + 5) (y + 2) ]

Note that there's a (y + 2) on the top and bottom, so we can cancel them out.

4 / (y + 5)

Nr: 4y+8 can be rewritten as 4(y+2)
Dr: y^2 + 7y + 10 can be rewritten as Y^2+5y+2y+10
y(y+5)+2(y+5)
(y+2)(y+5)

therefore the answer is 4/(y+5)

First: factor the numerator and denominator > find the least common factor:

[4(y + 2)]/[(y + 2)(y + 5)]

Second: cancel "like" terms > cancel "y+2"

4/(y + 5)
