Usually when driving with people, the best songs are singalong-able. Songs that might seem cheesy in other circumstances can be really great in this context: Erasure or Abba etc. Songs with catchy choruses, songs that everyone knows. Stuff you might not be caught dead listening to by yourself, can work really really well driving with other people.
Driving by yourself, instrumentals can be really great. I love Metallica's Orion for long drives solo: I've listened to it 4 or 5 times in a row when on the road, which takes up most of an hour.
