The most advanced explanation of this that I have is that acids are proton (H+ ion) donors and bases are proton receptors. Other properties: acids have a pH lower than 7, bases have a pH higher than 7. Acids taste sour, bases taste bitter. Acids react with metals and bases react with organic compounds.
