Most of the sciences take four or five years after a BS. PhDs n the liberal arts usually take an extra two years.

In the sciences there are usually two or three years of classes, a written exam after the second year, an oral exam after the third year, a dissertation that takes one to three years to write and a defense of the dissertation.
