Right now, i have it soaking through in a bucket, how long should I wait until i put it into my tank.

also, i have heard that marine sand is not good for freshwater, i have play sand, but my dad uses marine sand from the pet store, it says it is healthy for the freshwater and saltwater fish, the people at my reliable LFS told me this, as well as my dad?

a lot of people use sand blast sand... basically use sand that's not like little shards of glass.... use rounded sand.. play sand might be ok... you can find some at the hardware store or landscaping store... fish stores will rip you off... they markup on sand and gravel like 100%...

don't just soak your sand, you have to rinse... stir.. dump out the water.. do this like 10 times... while you're at it... check the ph on the water in the sand... check to see if it's the same as your tap water.

marine sand is fine.

As long as the marine sand isn't calcium sand, or the kind that has the beneficial bacteria in it, it should be fine in a freshwater tank. Regular #8 sand is perfect for fish tanks as long as you keep rinsing it until the water running off it is clear. If you're going to use marine sand, put some water in with it for a few days then have your local pet store check it for salinity, pH, and carbonate hardness. Make sure you tell them it is for a freshwater tank.

Rinse the sand out really well, stir it up with your hand with a strong water flow and let all the debris and junk float out of the bucket. The only real problem i could see is that sand is easily stirred up and blown around by filters etc.

You really only want to wash it to get the dust off it, then it can go right into the aquarium.

Marine sand isn't bad for a freshwater tank, but is typically made of crushed coral or dolomite which will make your water harder and can affect the pH of the tank.

i've used regular sand a few times when i had a lot of plants, you will need to wash and rinse your sand until it runs clear, about a dozen times or more, exhausting but worth it
