The country will fly the flag at half-staff for 30 days. There is actually a U.S. code that governs when the flag will be flown at half-staff, and on top of the the President can issue an executive order to have the flag flown at half-staff across the U.S. for any reason he deems fit.

For thirty days after the death of a current or former President.

For ten days after the death the current Vice-President, Chief Justice, or Speaker of the House of Representatives.

From the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession

On the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress

On Memorial Day until noon

Upon presidential proclamation, which have included: the remembrance of the 9/11 attacks, the death of Pope John Paul II, the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003, the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the Indian Ocean tsunami, and the death of Coretta Scott King

I work in a courthouse and we are leaving the Flag at half mast for 30 days for any president.
We did for Reagan and will for Ford.
Hope that helps.

The term is staff, not 'mast'. A mast is on a boat.

Till he is buried is the norm, but basically depends on how much you loved/respected that person as to how long you are in mourning for that person. For example someone who has lost someone special may never raise the flag/put away pictures, etc ever again. I would say 3 days is respectful and symbolic, (mind, body & soul = 3 days)

** this is simply my opinion :-)

The period of time traditionally is thirty days unless the sitting president extends it.
