If the little speaker icon is not present in your Systems Tray (nest to the time in the bottom right of the screen do this. Click on Start, choose All Programs, then Accessories, and finally Entertainment. Under that is Volume Control, click on it. Make sure everything is not checked (muted). Lets say everything is unchecked, now what? Well click on Start, RIGHT click on My Computer, choose the last entry in the side menu called Properties. A block called System Properties will pop up. Click on the Hardware Tab, then Device Manager. and a list of all the hardware in your computer (hard drives etc) will appear. Click on "Sound, Video and Game Controllers". Right click on your sound card card (it should be something like "something AUDIO") and choose Update Driver. If that doesn't work, stay with me Lisa, now double click on the your sound card, and choose the driver tab, and click on Roll Back Driver, hopefully that will work. Worst case, no sound, hold on. Get a headset/headphones and plug them in where the speakers plug in the back of the computer, play some music. If you can hear the music in your headsets, your speakers are dead. If you can't, your sound card is dead. Sound cards cost around $30 on up, speakers, the el cheapo type, $10 on up. Best of luck.

First go to "control panel" and "Sounds" or audio or something like that. Whatever you have on your computer and make sure you haven't muted or have the volume controls turned off or too far down. Check your speakers for good connections and power. Lastly some programs I found need to have a special plug in to get proper sound. The one I recently had to install was QuickTime
