It does NOT stand for emotionally charged punk rock.
It just stands for emotional. Emo and punk are very different. Emo's more like a wimpy version of goth, and goth is a branch of post-punk that became its own genre. So emo is like the disowned great grandchild of punk. At least, modern emo is. Supposedly, early emo (exp. Rites of Spring) didn't suck so much, but since I haven't really listened to that...
But since you're just asking to see how many people would answer without reading, I read- and I hate it when people don't, but then again, some people ask questions up front that are completely unrelated to their ACTUAL questions, and that's irritating as well.

I read the details. I think of emo as the whiny, wimpy voice of the modern punk movement. Some bands are emo. Some bands just have the occasional emo song.
Don't get me wrong. Some of the old whiny sh#t is good. Look at the Cure and the Smiths... some of it downright whiny... but damn, it rocks.
The difference between emo and goth is that goth is just dark, period. It doesn't necessarily whine about it, it just is.

Emo is an emotionally charged hardcore punk genre. A sub-genre of hardcore punk. It was around in the late 80s, early 90s and the whole movement only lasted about 4 years in the Washington DC area.

It's stupid. The kids I see who are EMO somehow glorify, death dying and morbid sh!t. Just today I saw a EMO profile on myspace and saw a kids profile with a gun lying on the floor next to a body with blood spattered.....SICK...I just dont get it. Whats the point? For reaction? Yep, thats stupid.

I read the details.Wow,it's dangerous when people are bored.I don't consider myself emo,but sometimes I can be....Once,I accidentally cut myself(a little cut),and I don't know why,I just tried to cut myself again....Thinking back on it....ewwww.....gross.....
