On a 50 point assignment (for credit only) I got 7 points when I did almost all of it. I attended 8/11 discussions, but only got half credit. I should have a B in Chem, yet that got me a C. I have this teacher next semester too-I don't want her to hate me. So what is an appropriate way to contest my grade? I already emailed her twice-she has ignored my emails.

I actually did talk to her in person first about the fact that the first assignment (online) wasn't showing up. She said she'd take care of it but never did. I only noticed the discrepancies after the final-already off campus.

She may have ignored your e-mail messages ... teachers are generally drowned in them, and it could be that she made a reasonable decision to see your request as not serious since you didn't approach her in person.
Try talking to her during office hours. Don't plead your case up front ... ask her a neutral, non-loaded question about how your grade was computed. Encourage her to talk as much as you can (nodding, responding only when asked a question, etc.).
If she graded you unfairly ....
And you are immediately confrontational? Your life stays complicated.
And you are not immediately confrontational? She's going to have to talk her way out of this one, which is really exactly what you want her to have to do.
A final reminder: If you want someone to give you something, you have to find a way for them to be able to give it to you.
P.S. If you approach her deferentially, in a non-argumentative fashion, and she's still unreasonable? The bonus is that you have one heck of a good case to make to the department head.

well, firstly, you should call her office and make an appointment to meet with her and see why you got these grades. perhaps maybe they were justified. this is what teachers are for - usually they are more than happy to sit down with students and explain how they got a grade and why.
after all ---- just because you did an assignment does not mean you answered the questions correctly!! just saying.
and just because you attended the discussion....doesnt mean youll get credit because you took up a spot in the room.
discussion is required. and 8 out of 11? that is 70% of the discussions. what the hell happened?
sounds to me like you half assed your way through the class and now expect an over average grade when you gave a barely average performance in the class.

I would try to meet with the professor in person because in a huge lecture hall you are just another face! Show the professor the effort you put into the subject matter and demonstrate the progress you have made. If you feel that you have been mistreated or wrongfully graded appeal to the department.
PS. try not to seem angry or offense that will only fuel the fire

Yes, never sit back an accept a grade if you think it's unwarranted! Definitely go to the department head (we all have a boss) and air your grievance, but make sure you are able to back it up, because you will need to prove that you deserved a higher grade. Make your points and keep your speech short and to the point. Don't add any personal issues i.e., "she hates me" just give him the straight dope.
Good Luck!

i'm an authority at this style of question. In seventh grade, i ought to envision magazines like CosmoGIRL! and Seventeen. additionally, teen magazine by employing the publishers of Seventeen. some issues could be no longer so large in there to envision, yet once you bypass over it or maybe rip the website out you will no longer word this is there. you may get subscriptions to Seventeen, teen, and CosmoGIRL! online for $5 each and every on their web pages.

The best way to contest a grade, other than speaking directly to the professor, is to contact your university ombudsman. They will tell you if you have a case, and then if you do have a case, represent you. Many people have gotten their grades changed by doing this.
