Sorry this is wrong information with you any second marriage can land a man ( other then a muslim) behind the bars for 7 years with fine under sec 494 of The Indian Penal Code, if both the marriages get proved in the court.

If you are an Indian, as your name suggests, you are supposed to know about it very well. If it is common as you are inclined to think, the married male members of your family, your father included, must have more than one wife each.
If you are not an Indian and live in some Western country, you must know that men living there rampantly cultivate relations with women outside their marriage.
In India, apart from those communities which sanction polygamy, having an illegal wife is more of an aberration than a rule. It is common to a very minuscule minority who are so inclined. And compared to the West, it is too small to take into consideration.
So, no need to show a holier than thou attitude, when it comes to matters Indian.

first let me ask u which wife of ur father were u born to ..... the legal or the illegal one...because without u going thru the kind of situation u r in i am sure u would not have asked such a question, for am sure u will be having an indian origin .. u could either be an indian born in india or an american born confused indian ....for only when we are vexed with something do we tend to ask the question the way u have asked........ either way i wish u all the best in finding ur own identitiy and in finding an answer which will help u in ur future marital life

firstly it is not illegal to have more than 1 wife in India. There is no law in India which considers it as a crime because it is a social practice and not something illegal. In certain districts of tamilnadu almost every male has 2 wives. If the first wife does not bear children(barren) it is permitted by law and society for second wife.

Muslims can have more than 1 wife. I've once asked this same question to my Indian friend if Hindees can also have more than 1 wife, his answer was yes, but ONLY WHEN HIS WIFE AGREES. That's why there aren't many Indian (Hindee) men with more than 1 wife I think. So the answer to your question is, maybe it's not that common.

I am not sure what you are comparing Indian Men with but I think you should be sure of;
If you are doing it and trying to justify it as right, then let me tell you it is wrong.
If you are planning to have one more then it is injustice to the existing one,
If you are trying to copy some one else please do not do, you do not have the wife like he has.
And wife can only be one the other is called w****.
Believe me men in India are as devoted as any where in the world.

Well in my opinion this depends on an individual what path he want to choose for himself and for his younger ones. If we talk of marriage it can't be consider as an individuals choice, its about 2 families which become 1 after marriage. I admit in some cases understanding mismatches and life become bitter cause of which one take looses interest in his/her mate. But if you try and give proper solution to the problems i m sure one will resolve any dam prob. of the family. On other side if you still fail then better to dissolve your marriage n go for divorce, then go for another girl of your choice. And before that think 3 things a) what values your are planting in your kids? b) what if your wife wants 2 husbands at a time? c) and in last are you capable enough to keep your commitment with the other girl you are going for? or your search moves on :) Dj

My dear friend in India ... One wife is more then enough to make your life hell. So , here Common law not allow 2 wifes in ... But in some special laws in minorites they may have 3 wifes .

No not generally. Thats not to say all married men have one wife each. Some do have de facto relation with other women.
