Contractors are regulated by the State.

Depending on which state you live in, you can check on your States web-site.

In California
www.cslb.ca.gov

There is a license status check which allows you to check by license number, company name, and person's name.

Your state may vary, however that is where I would start.

Call the city hall and ask them or ask the contruction company where their license if from.
