Yes! Great question. It bothers me when people call everyone they know their friend. Then I don't know if I'm really cared about or not. For example, this woman I had been getting to know was confusing me with her behavior so I told her I had hoped we'd eventually be friends. She said we already were. We were in the same academic program but we never hung out outside of classes, didn't talk about many personal things, and didn't even always greet one another! Then I found out she refered to everyone as a friend. It sure makes me feel a lot less special. Here I just considered her an aquaintance but I cared about her... and she considered me a friend but she rarely talked to me. It doesn't make sense, does it? I love being considered someone's friend, but I rather they act like I am rather than just saying it. Friendship has to be earned through trust!

I think so. I consider most people acquaintances, neighbors, co-workers, etc. To me a friend is someone you can depend on, trust to always be there for you as you would for them. Whether I see one of my friends on a daily basis or once every year or so, you can always just pick up where you left off with a friend. Not always so with an acquaintance. I have many acquaintances but have only three people I would consider "friends".

Everyone should be allowed to define "friend" as they choose. If you don't want to use friend to describe people you don't know that well, then don't!
