Actually, I think that the Leafs have a lot more going for them this year then they did last year simply because of their new coach. Paul Maurice is finally giving some of the younger players some decent ice time. That was something that Pat Quinn was always reluctant to do. I think that Paul Maurice makes everyone work a little bit harder then Pat Quinn did too - there is no 'country club' going on anymore... that's a good thing.
The biggest problem with the Leafs is that they always seem to run into injuries every year, particularly with their older players (which isn't really that surprising). That's why if they want to be a team of the future they will have to continue to give their younger players a fair chance out there on the ice and in tough games and ultimately build their team around them. Sundin won't be around forever.
