The natural consequence of this ignorance and blindness has been despotism, mal-administration, bigoted persecution and oppression of their their co-religionists.

There are many religions and cultures that fall under this category. More concise would be to simply say; What permanent civilization and progress can be achieved from a people that try to gain their happiness on others suffering?

If that was the question, the USA would be the main subject in question.

I think you have to be more specific. Some religions evolve from their founding. Others don't. It doesn't matter what a religion (or person) was, only what they are.
