First of all- go to the library! Tell the librarian the last three books you liked and ask for suggestions.
Also- the New York Times publishes the top best sellers list- if most of American's literary folk are reading a book, there must be one on the list you'll like. Local bookstores keep this list in their stores.
Try an online place like Amazon: once you buy a book they will make suggestions based on your taste by telling you "People who bought this book also bought..."
Do you like fiction or non-fiction? Big difference there. I like both. I tend to like many books on Oprah's list- my sister buuys them and passes them around for all the family to read.
Good books about struggles: Lord of the Rings, The Color Purple, Jane Eyre, the Good Earth, Madame Curie, The Glass House (new), The Poisonwood Bible.
Look for authors who have won Nobel or Pulitzer prizes: Pearl S Buck, Willa Cather, Edith Wharton: Rudyard Kipling, Sigrid Undset, Eugene O'Neill, Sinclair Lewis.
I read a book a week on average; not right now since I am studying chemistry and have too much work. If I find a book I like, I look up all that person's work and try and read through it all. I like classics, and I try to have every fifth book be non-fiction.
I wish more people would just shut the tv off and read. I hate hearing about stupid shows every morning instead of opinions on how a good book made someone think!
Good luck!

Here's a book all about someone's personal struggle that helped me keep it together during the toughest time of my life. It has been inspirational for a lot of people:
"Papillon" by Henri Charriere.
You can find it on www.amazon.com or in most book stores ot libraries.

The Fifth Ring series by Mitchell Graham. This is an excellent series. I loved it so much, I went back and read the entire trilogy again immediately. You'll really like it.

It should be at any bookstore or online shop.

Wayne Dyer Inspiration Your Ultimate Calling, also on audiobook and DVD. PBS.

Free download available.

I cried tears of joy for hours watching The Power of Intention on PBS. Life changing, I thought there was something wrong with me, but finally I'm home with like minded people.

And definitely go to the library, the librarians are pros with books. Its their day job.

American Gods and all other books by Neil Gaiman. They are wonderful: funny, philosophical, descriptive... You can't go wrong with Gaiman. Check the local library. :)
