my hubby wants a banjo I thought I would get him one for Val. day, what the best brand (cheap) considering he doesn't know how to play it yet

I've seen some nice Washburns that were reasonable and sounded OK. He can always upgrade with a new head and stuff, the white round part that looks like a drum. Ask in a music store.

Goldtone banjos are really great for beginning to intermediate. It's just that they are not built to last 100 years. What style of banjo are you looking for? plectrum? tenor, 5 string? Guitar banjo? banjo mandolin? What style music will you be playing stroke (clawhammer)? classic? Irish? ....
