Bettas hate flake food. They can be picky, some will eat it but they like pellets better or for a treat blood worms. How you clean the gravel depends on the tank set up and size. If you have it in a bowl you have to change the water once a week. Remove the fish and clean it out. No soap and add dechlorinator made for fisk water in the bowl. In a 2+ tank you would want to invest in a gravel vacum and clean every 2 weeks 25-50% depending on the filtration you have and how dirty the tank gets.

Betta bites are better for them. As for the food in the gravel, what I do is take the betta out with some of the water from the bowl. Get a strainer and wash out the gravel with water. run water in sink and finger test it with the old water from the tank. get to about right temp and put in some water conditioner. This will help reduce stress on the fish and also remove some minerals and stuff that isn't good for the fish. empty old water with fish into your hand and put fish in new tank. Do this at least once a week. Feed the betta about 5 betta pellets in the morning and 5 at night. That is all they need. hope this helps.

As you probably noted in the previous answers, many bettas will not eat flake food. However, there are always exceptions (my two bettas being such - they are the least picky bettas I have ever seen). There is flake food sold specifically for bettas. One brand that I know of is HBH Betta ColorBright flakes, which are advertised as being able to enhance your betta's color (I honestly don't think that the food does that, but whatever). It's important to get betta-specific flake food so that they get the proper amount of protein.
I do highly suggest feeding your betta more than one type of food. Try the HBH Betta Bites, or freeze-dried bloodworms or brine shrimp. Having various foods keeps your betta happy (and also keeps it from getting constipated!).

I would go with Hikari Bio-gold for bettas. It's what I fed mine (I have catfish now, my mom has my betta). You can occasionally give either dried or frozen bloodworms as a treat. There are other betta foods out there, but Hikari is the best. My fish are on an exclusive diet of Hikari products.
To answer your other question, a syphon is a good way to do spot cleaning if you have a plant/vase/betta combo, otherwise I would just get a small (pint and a half) container and put dechlorinated water in it, put your betta in it, and clean the bowl/tank, with hot water (no soap!) and replace the water with more dechlorinated water, and carefully put the betta back in.

I use a turkey baster to clean food out of the gravel. It's quick cheap and really doesn't upset my bettas!
For food I have always fed them bio gold from Hikari. I don't know anything about ground flake food. If it is for bettas then it should be OK.

They might, but usually they don't touch flakes. They really should eat special betta food anyway. There is a reason they design food specifically for bettas. If there is leftover food you are feeding too much. Get a betta pellet that floats that way it is easier to clean out what does not get eaten.

Yes, a betta can eat ground flake food, but unground flake food would be beter because it's not just little bits.
Akso you only have to clean your tank once every week.

Betta's are carnivores, so they should eat food made for them.
Here is some advice I got on feeding Betta's from Carl S. He has been professionally taking care of Aquariums for over 27 yrs. This is copied and pasted from my personal email:
CARL S.: As to your question, I recommend Sanyu or Hikari Beta Gold, but HBH and others make a good betta pellet too. Make sure to soak your pellets for at least 5 minutes to soften them up and release air that can cause intestinal infections.
ME: "Make sure to soak your pellets for at least 5 minutes to soften them up and release air that can cause intestinal infections." I thought about doing this for the babies, but never though about doing this for the adults!
ME: Interesting article...can Betta's eat Spirulina Algae? I mean they are carnivores right, I know this sounds silly after asking what Betta food was the best.
CARL S.: Hope the pellet and flake soaking helps. As for babies eating spirulina, it would be good for them as a supplement, especially for immune protection, but being more carnivores you still should feed the Betta Pellets such as Sanyu or Hikari.

Mine will only eat flake food. I have tried a couple other kinds and it just turns away from it. Make sure your not putting too much in there. I take my tank apart once a month and rinse it out with warm water and put it back together. Takes some time, but he seems to be thriving well.
