I raised 4 children. I don't believe we ever waited until our children were 3 or 4 before we knew if they were right or left hand dominant. I think if you play with your child and do activities, notice what hand they prefer to use you can figure if they are going to be right or left. It isn't rocket science. Rare but there are people who are equal at using both right and left. very rare.

It has been a long time but I'm sure you should be able to tell by the time they are a year, year and half for sure. They will use that hand to point to ask for things. It will be the dominant hand for communicating with you. The primary side. When they reach for toys or food or something to drink. First time they choose what hand to put the spoon in, you will know.

A baby usually hasnt expressed definite favor over one hand until one year old. At that point, whatever hand is going to be dominant, is already. You can try holding an object exactly in the middle infront of the baby and see what hand he/she grabs it with the most. But honestly, if you observe your baby, you will see that he/she prefers one hand over the other.

Many times you won't know until they're old enough to hold a crayon or pencil and start to learn to write - 3-5 years! Babies will experiment with either hand and will sometimes favor one side and then the other before the natural ability becomes apparent. The thing is, during the first years they're mostly learning gross (large) motor control, and their dominant hand doesn't become apparent until they work on very fine motor control, such as writing.

Babies don't show a preference for a dominant hand. They have a hard enough time trying to learn hand-eye coordination. Children don't show any signs of a dominant hand until they're about 3 years old.

Pay attention to their actions. Which hand do they try to grab objects with first? They will start at around 5 mos. You will notice a pattern. This is how I was always able to tell.

I dont care what any of those people say. I play with my baby every single day for hours on end and you can tell she favors her right side. Shes obviously not writing with it but she does eat with it, play with it, try to poke my eyes out with it. She just turned one and shes been that way for a few months now. Just pay attention and wait.

Children may not choose until they are 3 or 4. Some even later as they will switch back and forth. Usually the choose as they begin writing or throwing a ball. So at this point don't worry about it.

It is not something they really show till they are two or three. Most babies use both hands, switching on and off.
