It's a safe bet to go in the general ranking of the UCs. Berkeley likely has the best department, with UCLA next, etc. I don't believe UCSD has a major in that area so UC Irvine is prolly 3rd.
I went to UC Irvine and I know the criminology dept has some world renowned professors. In law school, I saw studies and articles written by various UC Irvine professors. One who wrote my letter of rec had mentioned she was kind of well known, but she didn't brag much about it. Once I got into law school, I found out just how famous and respected she really was. The dept claims to be one of the best in the country, but until I see some actual rankings in person, I'll defer to Berkeley and UCLA cuz everyone claims to be "one of the best".
