Like everyone says the 305 by design has no real torque. If it was my money I would look into putting a LT-1 in there. From the Factory they came with 275HP / 325 lbsTorque. They can be beefed up to well over 375HP and still be very steetable and most of it will be bolt on stuff. You can change cams and valve springs while motor is out. Look into LT4 heads too - ebay is your friend here. The LT-1 market is saturated right now. I am positive you could find a complete motor for under $800. You could buy headers, a cat back, low flow air intake system, pulleys, intake, fuel injectors and a new cam install / valves / heads and a dyno tune - and spend $3800 all done and told and only make 330 HP / 330 TQ. Just my .02.

The 305 is Chevy's second worst idea behind the 307. Put a 350 in it. Then you have something to work with.

Yup as with everyone else.... RIP OUT THE 30SLOW and put in a 350, 305s have always been weak and sluggish. a 350 of course I gutted a 76 chevy and put in a 500 cu in cadillac motor.. so it all depends on how much power you want.

You can change the Heads, Cam, and Injection system set up.

But you will come out better with a Used Vortec 350, LT1, LS1
Make sure you rebuild your transmission for towing.

Also if you just need better towing real quick.. See if your truck has the 2.79 open rear end???? If it does look for a better rear end. You can get a used one for 400 to 1000.00 and look at gears from 3.64 to 4.11 ... Posi or Limited slip would be best.

You can also have Detriot Locker gear set install in your rear end housing... And pick your gear for all your driving...

Or do all Engine upgrade, Tranny rebuild and rear gear...

...

305's have always been weak, it's hard to get them to pull harder w/out the help of something crazy like a blower or something. you might try a computer chip for some more performance...opening up the air cleaner and exhaust will make a slight difference but not much.

That transmission calls for Dextron 3 fluid, Mercon 2 is an acceptable substitute. I simply stock Mercon fluid and use it in everything now - I have yet to find a transmission that doesn't like it.
