Hire a CHIMNEY SWEEP or home inspector before you build a fire. Peace of mind comes VERY cheap.

YOU have received several good answers already. I agree about the chimney sweep OR inspector. Call a couple and get some opinions. Have the chimney cleaned, the fireplace inspected thoroughly. If you are going to use it make sure you use a hard wood and dont use the quick starting logs.
Just remember, when the fireplace is being used it requires combustion to burn. It will pull the warm air (heat) out of your house and it will go up the chimney. A burning fireplace will exhaust the heat in your house in 1 hour. The 2nd story of your home will get cool fast.
Make sure your homeowners insurance policy provides coverage. I've seen some that the agent did not include it.
Fireplaces are neat, provide heat directly in front of them and are very romantic but definately not efficient.

Can you use the fireplace? Yes, as long as your insurance is paid. Kidding.... now for real...you should pay a chimney service to come and clean it, and ask them to evaluate it for safety. They can tell you if there is a dangerous creosote level, or any cracks or problems with the flue, etc. Age isn't strictly a guideline. My parents live in a house that was built in 1710 and they use their fireplaces all the time. Good luck... be careful.

I would recommend you call a professional to come out, clean out your fireplace and chimney and make sure it is safe to use. Then use it and have fun with it.
