Well, let's see. A person from Puerto Rico, whom you might call a hispanic, wouldn't like to be called Mexican. Neither would a Cuban, nor a Spaniard, nor a Panamanian, Costa Rican, Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, Salvadorian, Paraguayan, Uruguayan, Columbian, Peruvian, Chilean, Argentinian, Brazilian, Ecuadorian, or a Bolivian. I'm sure I left some country out, and I apologize to anyone who might take exception for the oversight. But, yes, you are being racist when you group all "hispanics" into a category called Mexican.

No, not racist. Everything isn't racism. Some things are done or said out of ignorance. Every hispanic (a homogenized term), or individual of latin ancestry isn't Mexican. If the person is from Mexico, or of Mexican ancestry, then this may be the correct term.
To be sure and safe, I ask the person how they define themselves.

No it doesn't mean you're racist but I wouldn't do that. I'm going to tell you like my friend told me, she's Cuban. Don't call Latinos/Latinas Mexican if they're not Mexican because it's seen as an insult. She said most Latinos/Latinas look down on Mexicans because they're mostly seen as poor and uneducated. But you should first ask them what their nationality is before you call them Mexican.

You are a white girl, right? Well it would be like calling all white people Germans. Some people would be offended. I went to school with this one guy who is Choctaw, a lot of kids called him Mexican because he had black hair and dark skin. It made him mad. Labeling all spanish speakers as Mexican is just wrong.

If the person is actually from Mexico, or of Mexican descent it is fine, if you are using it as a blanket term for all hispanic people it is not.

Puerto Rican is considered a nationality, not a race because there are many different races that make up Puerto Rico. You would be Black Puerto Rican. My friend Luz just calls herself a Black Rican.

I don't like being called hispanic. I like being called Mexican.
But only because my ancestors came from Mexico....
Yeah you shouldn't call those who aren't from Mexico or Mexican descent Mexican, it can really make them mad, and it makes you sound stupid.
