it wouldn't be the tequila that made him puke. you would already have had milk in your breasts ready for the next feeding, so the tequila would be in your system for the following feed and hopefully that is a few hours ago and so would be well diluted in your system by then. just a nasty coincedence. i spoke to a lacation consultant just the other day who told me this info regarding alcohol and breastfeeding.
Hope you feel better now and well done on feeding for that long. I wish i had fed my last child for that long.

You can drink in moderation while breastfeeding. One shot of tequila shouldn't have effected him. No need to take him to the ER.
Breastfeeding and Alcohol
By Kelly Bonyata, IBCLC
Guidelines
Current research says that occasional use of alcohol (1-2 drinks) is not harmful to the nursing baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.”
In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom's blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom's body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels.
Always keep in mind the baby's age when considering the effect of alcohol. A newborn has a very immature liver, so minute amounts of alcohol would be more of a burden. Up until around 3 months of age, infants detoxify alcohol at around half the rate of an adult. An older baby or toddler can metabolize the alcohol more quickly.

Your baby did not puke because you drank a shot. Do not take him to the ER. He will be perfectly fine. I commend you on breastfeeding and the ideal thing if you are going to let loose and have a drink or two then do it when he goes to bed so then by the am it is so diluted that it will be fine. I have nursed 5 children and I have drank on occasion and all my kids are perfectly fine and normal.
Alot of people who come on here and bash is just there way of being judgemental......like I said I have 6 kids(5 were nursed, and I nursed most of mine past age 2!!) and nursing now a 13 month old.
Really honestly he will be fine, you are not a bad mom.

No worries, he will ne fine. It takes about an hour before alcohol gets into your milk and 1 shot is not going to hurt him. Also good for you still breastfeeding your baby at 11 months:) it is the best thing that you can do for him. Really, don't worry he will be fine. Have a great New Years!!

He probably just has a sensitive stomach. My daughter is 10 mos. and has a sensitive stomach for some things, so I generally wait two hours between having a drink and nursing. Alcohol metabolizes so quickly in the body, that is the recommended time I've gotten from a few sources.
He should be fine, just perhaps nurse before having the shot next time. :) And good job still breastfeeding! It's such a pain sometimes, but worth it.

An occasional glass of wine or beer or two is fine. But taking shots... A whole
different story. Do the pump and dump method. If you're going to drink and still want to nurse. Make sure you have extra bags on hand. I know it can be hard to not go out and party, but prepare yourself. That's your kid... Why take the risk. You don't nurse all your life and your baby only needs it for but so long. You can sacrifice for a little. You shouldn't feel bad you knew when you fed him you had a shot. Just think about it. But he should be fine.

I wouldn't worry about it, one shot of tequila is not going to hurt your baby. He probably threw up because babies tend to do that. If it continues than I would worry.
AND to DRKbabe73...you obviously are not educated. An occassional drink, even one shot while breastfeeding is not harmful to the baby, very little alcohol gets into the milk. Educate yourself before you berate people on an answers forum.

He'll be fine. It probably wasn't the tequilla that made him sick. I dont think it can get into your breastmilk that quickly. Even if he did, I'm sure he will be fine.
Ignore the comment about why are you still breastfeeding. I breastfed my son until he was over 2. So many people stop so soon. Keep up the good work!!

He'll be fine, but definately watch what you eat/drink. If you drink again, I would "pump and dump" before the next feeding to get as much out of your milk as possible.
ETA: I know they say it usually takes a couple hour for what we intake to show up in our milk, but I read something the other day (forget where) that alcohol can show up much sooner, the other posters are right, though, It could be something you ate a couple hours earlier.
Hey Rokkibean...educate yourself before spouting off again.

If it was just one shot of tequilla then he will be fine. You must think about alcohol before you breastfeed your baby not after. Alcohol is known to cause brain damage & developmental problems in children which sometimes doesn't show up until they start school. Be careful. Perhaps you could think up giving up breastfeeding if you feel like resuming some freedom in your life. Good luck!
