Maybe it was only taped from the top and he slipped behind it. He was working behind it many times after all. Or maybe the set technician did it for him!

If it's a movie goof, it's a book goof as well, because Stephen King wrote "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank redemption"

I always wondered that too. I guess hollywood didn't want you to think that far. I just can't see how he did it so well that the warden and gang couldn't see the escape route till the warden threw the chess piece through it in anger. Oh well, you're more intelligent and observant than hollywood can cater too. Good question. I'll have to think more on the subject next time I see the movie. God Bless you.

It is a continuity goof every movie has them. You just have to look for them, most people don't have the eye to spot them but I do assure you they are there.
