If looking for red foxes, then look at areas where farmland meets the woods. Foxes are known as being "creatures of the edge" for a reason. They are crepuscular (active during sunrise and sundown), and prefer to hunt along the edge of a woods-field intersection, preferably where there is a lot of cover or sbrush of moderate height in the field. So, a trip to corn field in the late afternoon to early evening may be very rewarding to you.
Gray foxes prefer relativley undisturbed woodlands.

In North America... preferably in Canada. I see red foxes all of the time here in fact it is probably the wild animal I see most often where I live in Northern Ontario Canada. Just the other day I saw a Red fox and we stopped so I could call it and he almost came to me, they are so easily tamed its pretty normal for hunt camps and cottagers to have a familiar fox that visits the area and accepts food.

I live in Colorado and we have red fox all around in and outside of the city. I live in a part where we have bluffs with pine trees and open fields. I see the fox around dawn and dusk. Once in a while i will see one in the middle of the day.
