Well, in high school I knew I was the fat chick, though no one ever said anything to me about it that I can recall, since grade school.

I was half-teasingly called brainer and browner, but mine was a small school, and after grade 9 or 10 I didn't notice or experience cliques....we were all just friends or at least friendly with each other. Or maybe I just didn't notice cuz I had decided not to date in high school, and since I posed no threat to anyone, people were really at ease? I dunno.

I guess the only labels I felt the need to stand up against were when people used sexist phrases toward me or any other girl or females in general, or if I heard someone using racist remarks about anyone. But I'm a strong, confident, independent gal, and I'm white, so I probably had less of a personal stake in those labels than others might have.

The labels I wrestled with weren't from classmates and strangers; they were from family members, which is I think a lot more destructive.

Today, I SELF-identify as "a queer Christian single woman of size, with a heart for social justice." And I prefer the term 'egalitarian' over 'feminist'.

Humans always want to be individuals, so some people thrive on being 'something'. The strange part is as you get older your personality can jump all over the spectrum i.e. some situations introverted in others you are extroverted, patient - impatient etc. So to categorize somebody is quite difficult to do as people react differently in different situations

I like this question.

First, I was qualified as a preppy chick with the little dog and the rich parents. Which um, was about 1/3 true. (Little dog!)

Then, later in high school, I was put into the "Emo Druggy Partier" girl.. it's because of you're fashion, I suppose.

Don't worry about it. I hate it too. But yet, I still judge. It's human nature. Just be you, if they don't like it than you don't need them anyways. =)

It must be programmed into our DNA to automatically try to file people away into preset groups in our heads. We all do it, even those of us who abhor the practice. We stereotype people when we don't want to go to the trouble of getting to know them and all their complexities. That said, the best way to deal with it is to a) truly not care and b) defy the stereotypes. I love messing with people by doing and saying things that I know will confuse their assumptions about me.

My false categories: literary snob (I read trashy fiction, too); ambition-less stay-at-home-mom (I resent the assumption that if I choose to stay home w/ my baby it means I have no career ambitions or talents); feminazi (while I am an avid feminist, I hate this stereotype b/c it alienates strong women); and the list goes on.

Yea.....i was 5'9 in 8th grade...so not only was I "weird" cause I was too tall, but I got good grades in high school, so I was an uptight nerd that had no friends and supposedly did homework all weekend.

3 years into college all those people are either pregnant, living at home doing nothing, or working at walmart cause they are addicted to drugs and cannot afford to do anything else.

Dont worry...society blows, but it all adds up in the end.

I can't be categorized. :)

I'm a stay-at-home mom. But I collect body art. Up until last year I had 17 piercings. Up until recently my hair was blue and purple. I homeschool my kids but we're pagan, not Christian. Most people in our area who homeschool are conservative Christians. I believe eating a natural diet. I support organic farming. I believe in attachment parenting. People have tried to label me has a hippy but I don't fit the hippy category either. I have two college degrees and run my own business. But to look at me you'd never guess it. There is no way people can shove me into a category. I think labels are stupid anyway.

It's funny how life works out,the ones that seem to have it all, some of them wind up with nothing, and some of the ones with nothing wind up with it all, your right about one thing this is a bad time to be growing up,things use to be so simple, and now a brain surgeon can't get on the net.

Welcome to life! It will also be that way..Its how you rise to it that matters..and even more so..on how you conqurer it.

I am always catagorized as prissy and too good for anyone..and I don't understand why because I am the lowest self esteme of anyone I know..and I think I am in capable of anything and everything compared to everyone else around me.
