In the past, I could just right click on the shortcut of the program, and there would be an option that would say "scan program." But now, that option has disappeared. Can someone tell me what to do, maybe to restore that option when I right-click it, or perphaps to manually scan a program for a virus.

how can we help. you have not listed what scanner you are using.
however in trendmicro the scan is always there to scan individual files and programs. try running an online scan at housecall.trendmicro.com then go to http://www.registry-clean.net/ download and run the scan to fix any problems with your systems registry, and then last of all disconnect your computer from both your lan and the internet and re-install your virus scanner and or other malware scanners.
once clean restart your computer and then repeat the scans. now one your system is clean in stand alone mode then and only then re-connect to the internet. make sure to check for any updates to your malware scaneers as soon as you get back online. install any and then re-run a scan if clean great if not delete the infected files.
your system can be restored to a clean state if required later.

this is the best advice i can give without knowing what malware scanners you have installed.

Try right clicking on Start and click Explore, then scan the whole computer or just the program.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
