I have a couple of friends who went to Howard who insist it is the best of the HBCUs. From what I have seen of my MBA classmates who went to HBCUs, I have to agree.

Pick one with a good academic reputation like Hampton or Spellman.

FYI HBCUs do not discriminate anyone can attend black or white. They are called Historically black colleges and universities because at one time they were the only schools that would accept African Americans.

Howard, Morehouse or Spelman all rank in the top 100 undergrad in the US, according to USNews.com.

And for the on comment about Caucasians not being eligible to attend HBCUs, is a completely false statement. As a matter of fact any other race aside from African Americans can actually qualify for minority funding at HBCUs (including whites). It the federal govt way of evening the playing field. You would be considered a minority at these schools!!!!!

I attend Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, TX and i am truly enjoying my school. I would advise you to consider very carefully your major before deciding to attend an HBCU as some programs have NO funding. I am a nursing major and our program is second in the state for our NCLEX-RN passing rate, so we receive tons of grants to fund our department. Besides being one of the top schools for nursing I chose PVAMU for the sense of family, the strong educational tradition (second oldest institution of higher learning in the state of Texas) Affordability and close proximity to Houston (READ: LOTS of jobs and extracurricular fun) As an African American woman, I also felt a sense of social responsibility to contribute something to the institution that made it possible for the children of slaves to receive a college degree. Hope this helps!
