The majority of the movie was shot on the North Island - mostly because Peter Jackson's hometown of Wellington, where a lot of the movies were produced and filmed was located on the Northern Island. The mountain / rocky sequences were mostly filmed on Mount Ruapehu - located on the North Island.
Some of the scenes were filmed on South Island locations - though not nearly as many. The trilogy was shot at over 150 different locations with seven different units shooting, as well as soundstages around Wellington and Queenstown.
