3 inch hole is just too big for regular Spackle repair.

Go-ahead and make a larger hole, but this time, make it square and leave clean edges. You can use any tiny saws for this. Then, take a piece of wood and slide that behind it. Secure it with drywall screws to the undamaged portion of the existing wall.

Now, take a piece of new drywall and cut it to the exact dimension of the new hole. Place it in the hole so that it will rest on the wood you just secured. Now, use more screw and secure this new piece to the wood.

Use sand paper and sand the area even but rough so that drywall tape will adhere. Tape over the gaps and use drywall paste to go over. Let dry and smooth with sand paper. Paint over it once you are satisfied with the result.
