(I have a Philips 1 GB)
-First of all, it depends on how many songs you want downloaded. 1 gig holds 250 mp3's or 500 wma's--I would base it on the mp3 because most of P2P file-sharings have mp3 files. I would go by 1 GB.
-Since you're using the mp3 for your workout, look for the ones that come with a clip or a guard for it. That way, you wouldn't have to hold it as much. If you drop it, the plastic would reduce the damage.
One mp3 I know that has the plastic guard thingy is the Creative Zen (blue)--1GB. It's sale at Wal-Mart for $70. The White Creative mp3 has 2GB--$80 at Walmart. SansDisk also has those things as well, but I haven't actually listened to its quality.

If you need one with high durability to take for the gym I recommend any MP3 player from Creative's Nomad series. I've had a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra for four years, and I've taken in snowboarding, weight lifting, just about anywhere really and it's been dropped and hit more times than I can count. It still works like new and the battery still lasts for 8 hours from a full charge, not to mention it has several useful features that aren't on an Ipod.

I would definitely buy the iPod, one because it's a great, reliable product, and two because Apple has amazing customer service. If you iPod is under warranty (it comes with a free year) then as long as the damage wasn't you fault, they will replace the iPod. I almost bought another brand of mp3 player, but I'm glad I didn't.
