NANA! Good plot and not messy action manga... more on romance. It's about two 20 year old country girls named Nana met in a train to Tokyo. Oosaki Nana is a punk singer in the Band Black Stones. Komatsu Nana (nick named Hachi) followed her boyfriend which he moved to Tokyo a year ago. You will get hooked on it during the later chapters. You can get the manga and anime info and download in Takoyakis. Join the Takoyakis Yahoo group.
CLAMP mangas are great too. Try Card Captor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, Tsubasa Chronicle, xxxHolic and Chobits.

I fell in love with the Love Hina series by Ken Akamatsu. It's quite amusing with a bit of romance tossed in. It's about a young man who ends up living in a girls' boarding house.
Another one you can check out,.if you're up to thinking, is FLCL by Gainax. It's really complicated and nuts, but it's quite interesting and can be interpreted in so many ways. It's really got my mind working. Also, FLCL is only a two manga set, so it's not too much of a financial investment.

let me just say that Chobits is the best one out there, but Love Hina is right there next to it! I have also read Pita Ten and Kamichama Karin.

the only manga i have ever heard of is fruit basket so thats what i was gonna suggest...haha sorry i am not into manga!
